IELE756 Preparación y Análisis de Datos (Spring 2025)

• There will be a weekly problem set, up to 5 problem sets in total, plus an "Assignment 0", which is about installing and running the software tools.
• Late policy. You can request an extension of up to two days on any problem set by emailing your issue (heavy workload, travel, sickness, hangover, etc.) to the Canvas staff email before the problem set is due; reasonable such extension requests will be approved.
• Collaboration policy. Science is not done in isolation; you will work in teams of 2 or 3, as in real research labs. Together you will build a model from scratch using real data to predict when and where new outbreaks of selected diseases could emerge in Chile. You may use as much ChatGPT as you want, but everyone on the team must understand and be able to reproduce every part of the deliverable. AI tools can help, yet you are ultimately responsible for all submitted work and its correctness.
• Grading. Submissions must made through the Canvas page and consist of a compiled PDF document. Grades and comments will be posted to Canvas.
• Problems will be graded on a 0-2 scale:
  • 0 = Your solution is far from a good one, e.g., the code is incorrect or the solution vaguely specified, and not easily fixable.
  • 1 = Your solution is on the right track to a good one, but the write-up contained major errors or omissions, e.g., you didn't show what you need for correctness of your reduction.
  • 1.5 = Your solution is close to a good one, but the write-up contained some minor omissions or errors, or it was poorly worded.
  • 2 = Nailed it.
• Due dates are generally at 11:59am (noon) on the specified day (typically Mondays and 7 days after release).
